Lift

As a wing cuts through the air, its special cross section (called an airfoil) makes the air going over the top speed up. This causes a drop in pressure at right angles to the relative airflow which the wing feels as lift. This effect was named after its discoverer, the Swiss mathematician Bernoulli and is called "Bernoulli’s Law". The same effect can be demostrated by holding one edge of a piece of paper close to the mouth and blowing over it. Surprisingly, the paper is "sucked" upward by the drop in pressure at right angles to the jet of moving air. (Try it)
